Our first printer 30/03/2017
Hi there! We’re Rachel and Steve, the husband and wife team behind the LUUMI brand, and we’re excited to share the story of our journey and how we got to print lamps, which is still an odd phrase. For years, we found ourselves captivated by the world of 3D printing, dabbling with it mostly for the sheer joy of creation. What started as a fascinating hobby, a shared exploration into the endless possibilities of additive manufacturing, has now blossomed into something more profound. From our home workshop in Malaysia, we’ve spent the better part of a decade immersed in this technology, witnessing its evolution firsthand.
In the beginning
In the early days, our 3D printer was a source of endless amusement and experimentation. We were like modern-day alchemists, turning spools of filament into tangible objects that sprang from our imagination. The process was, and still is, a magical one: to design something on a screen and then watch, layer by layer, as it materializes into a physical form. This constant cycle of digital craftsmanship and physical creation fueled our passion and honed our skills.
Let there be Lamps
As 3D printing technology has evolved, becoming more precise, versatile, and accessible, we realized it was the perfect time to turn our passion into something tangible. The printers became faster, the materials more varied and sustainable, and the software more intuitive. We saw an incredible opportunity to combine our deeply ingrained love for innovative design with the incredible capabilities of 3D printing, bringing beautifully crafted, functional art pieces into your home. It was a “lightbulb moment” in more ways than one, as we decided to focus our creative energies on a single, transformative object: the lamp.
At LUUMI, we believe that great lighting can fundamentally transform a space, and we’re passionate about creating unique lamps that do just that. A lamp is so much more than a simple utility; it’s a beacon that sets the mood, a sculptural element that adds character, and a conversation starter that reflects personal style. We were inspired by the idea of creating lighting that was not only functional but also deeply artistic and personal. We wanted to design pieces that would not just illuminate a room, but also enrich it with their presence.
Each LUUMI lamp is more than just a light source; it’s a testament to the exciting fusion of technology and creativity. It represents the culmination of our shared journey, from hobbyists to professional designers. We meticulously design and 3D print every lamp with an unwavering commitment to care and precision, ensuring that you receive a high-quality product that’s both unique and enchanting. This hands-on approach, from the initial sketch to the final printed layer, allows us to imbue each piece with a personal touch.
Our design process is a collaborative dance of ideas and skills. We draw inspiration from the world around us – the geometric patterns found in nature, the clean lines of modern architecture, and the rich cultural heritage of Malaysia. These influences are then translated into designs that can only be realized through the intricacies of 3D printing. The technology allows us to create complex, organic shapes and delicate, latticed patterns that would be impossible to achieve with traditional manufacturing methods.
We are also deeply committed to sustainability, a principle that guides our material choices. We predominantly use a biodegradable, corn-starch-based plastic that is not only eco-friendly but also possesses a unique translucency that beautifully diffuses light, casting a warm and inviting glow. This commitment to the planet is an integral part of the LUUMI story, as we believe that beautiful design should not come at the expense of our environment.
We’re thrilled to share our creations with you and hope that a LUUMI lamp brings warmth, character, and a touch of modern magic to your space. Each lamp that leaves our workshop is a piece of our story, a symbol of our passion, and a shining example of how technology and art can come together to create something truly special. We invite you to explore our collection and find the perfect light to illuminate your home and your life.
